As a solopreneur, business support isn’t something you prioritise. You see yourself as a symbol of independence and self-reliance, with a passion for your craft and a vision to bring it to fruition. You take on the Herculean task of single-handedly managing every aspect of your business – from product/service development to marketing, customer service to finances. Not to mention parenting and chief tea-maker; you wear all the hats, striving to keep your venture afloat and thriving.
However, have you considered that amidst your drive for self-sufficiency, there’s a vital lesson that you must learn: the power of receiving business support. While it’s tempting to believe that you can do it all on your own (and that may well be the case in the early days!), the truth is that embracing support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a pathway to growth and success. You cannot receive infinitely if you insist on holding onto the reins!
Perhaps your resistance to receiving support is rooted in habitual thinking or thoughts that ‘appear real,’ but show no evidence of that actually being the case. Perhaps you believe things like:
- The learning curve to teach someone else is too big – it’s easier and quicker to just do it myself
- I can’t afford to employ somebody (maybe you should ask yourself, “Can I afford NOT to?)
- I’ve been let down in my life in the past – I don’t trust anybody with my business and vision
- If I don’t do it, it will all fall apart because nobody will be able to do it as well as me
- I must work hard to achieve what I want
- It’s my business so it’s all on me to make it work
- I have to hold all of the things or it’ll all go wrong
- This is my baby, I don’t want to hand any control over to someone else
- I feel guilty asking someone else to do it
- I like doing everything – it makes me feel useful and needed
If you’re operating from this level of thinking, you’re vibrating at a frequency equivalent to lack and scarcity – so that’s what you’ll attract more of! You’re not consciously creating your business…..your unconsciously inhibiting it’s growth.
So here’s my four reasons why I believe being open to receiving support is crucial for your solopreneur business.
1. Focus on your zone of genius
Your primary focus should be on leveraging your unique skills and talents – e.g, your “zone of genius.” This is where you excel, where your passion lies, and where you can deliver exceptional value to your clients or customers. However, when you’re bogged down by administrative tasks, technical issues, inefficient systems or other aspects of running a business, it can detract from your ability to fully immerse yourself in your expertise.
By allowing support in areas where you’re not as proficient or passionate, you free up valuable time and mental energy to concentrate on what you do best. This not only enhances the quality of your work but also allows you to innovate, create, and differentiate yourself in the marketplace.
There’s a great book called Who Not How by Dan Sullivan which focuses solely on this. If you don’t know how to do something, or don’t have the inclination to do something, find somebody who can. This is your ‘Who!’
2. Overcome limitations
No matter how skilled or dedicated you are, there are inherent limitations to what a single person can accomplish. Attempting to handle every aspect of your business single-handedly can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and ultimately, stagnation (analysis paralysis!). Recognising and accepting your limitations is the first step towards sustainable growth.
Seeking support doesn’t mean relinquishing control; rather, it’s about strategically delegating tasks to capable professionals who can complement your efforts and help you scale your business. Whether it’s outsourcing administrative work, hiring a virtual assistant, or collaborating with freelancers and consultants, embracing support allows you to expand your capacity and reach new heights.

3. Embrace collaboration and innovation
One of the often-overlooked benefits of receiving support is the opportunity for collaboration and innovation. When you open yourself up to working with others, you invite fresh perspectives, diverse expertise, and new ideas into your business. This collaborative synergy can spark creativity, problem-solving, and breakthroughs that may not have been possible in isolation.
By surrounding yourself with a network of supportive individuals – whether it’s mentors, peers, or industry professionals who are all aligned to your vision and values – you create a fertile environment for growth and learning. Through collaboration, you can tap into collective knowledge, leverage resources, and navigate challenges more effectively, ultimately propelling your business forward.
4. Uncover Resilience and Adaptability
In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving business landscape, adaptability is essential for survival. Solopreneurs who are open to receiving support demonstrate a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances, seize opportunities, and overcome obstacles with resilience.
Whether it’s seeking mentorship to navigate unfamiliar territory, hiring experts to stay ahead of industry trends, or joining communities for mutual support and encouragement, embracing support fosters a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. By staying flexible and responsive, solopreneurs can not only weather challenges but also emerge stronger and more resilient in the face of adversity.
So don’t fall into the trap of believing that you must do it all alone. By embracing support, you unlock the potential for growth, innovation, and success beyond your individual capabilities. Whether it’s through delegation, collaboration, or seeking mentorship, being open to receiving support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a strategic decision that will empower you to focus on your strengths, overcome limitations, and thrive in the competitive landscape of entrepreneurship.
