There was a time when I thought the answer to growing my business was always just one more piece of information away.

If I could just find the right strategy, the right framework or the latest social media trend, everything would finally click into place.

And to be honest, I still fall into that trap sometimes– after all some habits are hard to break, right?  But, now that I’m consciously aware of that thinking, it’s easy to catch it in the moment and return to ‘me.’

On top of that, I simply just got fed up of all that searching.   One more book, podcast, course, marketing expert, that would be the key to my success.   It’s tiring when you’re looking for something, and you don’t even know what!  I thought to myself, ‘there has to be a simper way,’ because it appeared that the more I learnt, the more overwhelmed I became.

Every expert seemed to have a different opinion. Every platform demanded something different. Every week there was a new algorithm to understand, a new AI tool to master or another “must-do” marketing tactic.  One expert said this, and someone else would say the complete opposite. All that ended up happening was that instead of feeling more confident, I just felt more confused.

Maybe you’ve experienced that too.

We’ve Never Had More Information

We’re living in a world where information has never been more accessible.

Within seconds, you can learn how to write better emails, build a website, create content, optimise your Instagram profile, launch a podcast, automate your business or use artificial intelligence.

Knowledge isn’t the problem. In fact, we probably have more marketing advice available today than at any point in history. So why do so many business owners still feel stuck? I don’t think it’s because they don’t know enough. I think it’s because they’re carrying too much.

More Information Doesn’t Always Create More Clarity

But I assumed the opposite. I thought that the more information I had to hand the clearer I would be on what to do next! Now I see that clarity comes from removing.

Removing the noise, the pressure, the endless list of things we think we should be doing. I’ve noticed that when we’re confused, our instinct is to search for another answer.  We rarely stop to ask whether the confusion is actually being created by all the answers we’ve already collected. Sometimes we’re not lacking information. We’re drowning in it.

Marketing Isn’t Really About Marketing

This might sound strange coming from someone who has spent over 25 years working in marketing, but I don’t think most people have a marketing problem.

I now think they have a clarity problem.

Marketing simply reveals whatever is already happening underneath. If you’re trying to sound like everyone else, your marketing will feel forced. If you’re unsure what you really stand for, your message will constantly change. If you’re trying to impress people instead of helping them, your content becomes exhausting to create. Marketing isn’t separate from you. It’s an expression of you. That’s why no strategy can ever replace self-awareness.

Things Changed When…

For me, there wasn’t one dramatic breakthrough, a life-changing seminar or a revolutionary marketing course.

It happened much more quietly than that.  I simply started noticing something.  That the moments when I experienced the greatest clarity didn’t happen while I was staring at a screen.  They happened when I stepped away from it.

Walking the dog, looking out to sea, making a coffee, driving home, having an honest conversation.  In essence, simply creating space. It was almost as though the answers had been there all along, but I couldn’t hear them over the noise.  That changed how I approached both life and business.

Seeing Instead of Searching

Today, I spend far less time asking, “What do I need to learn?”  Instead, I ask, “What makes sense for me?”  It’s a small question, but it changes everything. Because when you start looking differently, you often realise that what you’re searching for isn’t missing.  It’s simply hidden beneath assumptions, expectations and overthinking.

We all have blind spots, and that’s not because we’re not capable, but because we become so familiar with our own thinking that we stop questioning it. Sometimes all we need is a little space to notice what’s been there all along.

Maybe Business Is Simpler Than We Think

I’m not suggesting business is always easy.  Running a business takes courage, resilience and commitment.  There are challenges, setbacks and days when nothing seems to go to plan.

But complicated and difficult aren’t the same thing.  We’ve just become so used to adding layers that we’ve forgotten how powerful simplicity can be. Perhaps you don’t need another strategy.  Perhaps you need to reconnect with why you started doing what you do. Perhaps you don’t need another social media platform.  Perhaps you need to communicate more honestly on the one you’re already using. Perhaps you don’t need to become someone else to succeed.  Perhaps you simply need to stop hiding who you already are.

What If Clarity Isn’t Something You Find?

Here’s the thought I’d like to leave you with. What if clarity isn’t something you go out and find?  What if it’s what remains when the noise begins to settle?  And what if your next step isn’t learning more?  What if it’s noticing more? That’s at the heart of what I do- Confusion to Clarity.

Not giving people more information.  Helping them see what has always been true.  Because I believe that when we see more clearly, we do differently and naturally make better decisions. We communicate more honestly.  We build businesses that reflect who we really are. And perhaps most importantly, we stop believing that success lives somewhere outside ourselves.  Maybe it’s been there all along.

A question for you…

Where in your life or business have you been searching for another answer, when what you might really need is a fresh perspective?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.
