It’s one thing to show up with authenticity in your own brand. It’s another thing entirely when you’re tasked with capturing someone else’s voice, message, and essence in a way that feels aligned, strategic, and true.
As someone who creates marketing strategies and supports soul-led businesses in their growth, this has played on my mind more than once. How do you stay true to you while fully honouring them? How do you infuse heart, clarity, and depth — even when the task at hand might be to map out email funnels and lead magnets?
Here’s what I’ve learned: authenticity isn’t something you “put on.” It’s something you lead with. Whether you’re marketing yourself or someone else, the process works best when you bring your whole self to the table.
Be the mirror, not the mask
When I’m working with a client, I don’t show up pretending to be an expert in their business. I show up as an expert in mine — listening, reflecting, drawing out the gold that they often can’t see themselves.
It’s not about sounding like me. It’s about helping them sound more like them – so I am endlessly curious – what are their processes, what does the client journey look like, how do they currently acquire clients?
I ask LOTS of questions. I look for what’s not being said as much as what is. I tune into energy, not just words and I reflect back the bits that feel powerful, true, and a little bit sparkly.
This process only works when I’m present. When I’m not trying to impress or perform. When I’m simply being of service, asking:
“How do we bring more of you to this message?”

Let your intuition join the strategy table
I used to keep things separate: strategy here, soul stuff over there. Now I bring both. I schedule a blog post and in doing so, also sense when a certain message needs more depth or softness. I might suggest a lead magnet, but tune into whether the topic actually excites them or is just something they think they “should” do.
Clients often feel this, even if they don’t have the words for it. They’ll say things like:
“That just feels more me.”
“I’ve been saying that for ages, but it’s never sounded quite right until now.”
“I didn’t realise I was allowed to do it that way.”
Intuition is not fluff. It’s a business tool. And when paired with real marketing knowledge, it’s magic.
Be honest about what you see (gently)
Part of showing up authentically is being honest — kindly and constructively — when something isn’t quite landing.
Sometimes clients come with taglines or messages that feel off. Sometimes there’s a disconnect between what they’re saying and how they’re showing up. And it’s my job, lovingly, to name that.
Not with criticism. With curiosity.
Not to tear down, but to refine.
One of the kindest things you can do as a marketer is say:
“What if we said this in a way that feels more natural for you?”
or
“This message is strong, but I wonder if it’s still trying to convince rather than connect.”
Your role isn’t to please. It’s to serve. And truth is a form of service.
Let go of needing to get it ‘perfect’
There’s a very real pressure that can creep in when you’re creating a strategy on behalf of someone else — especially if they’ve hired you as “the expert.”
You want to deliver something exceptional. You want them to be impressed. You want them to say, “Yes! This is amazing!”
But when you’re trying too hard to “get it right,” you can lose touch with the quiet wisdom that actually knows the way.
So here’s my reminder to both of us:
You don’t need to get it perfect. You just need to stay in integrity.
Bring your curiosity. Bring your honesty. Bring your heart.
Marketing doesn’t need more pressure. It needs more presence.
Final thoughts
Marketing for someone else is a special, collaborative thing — especially when that person is building something heart-led, meaningful, and deeply personal.
Authentic marketing starts with authentic connection — with your client, yes, but also with yourself. Your job isn’t to outshine them. It’s to amplify them. To hold up the mirror and to listen for what matters, then weave your skills with their story to create something truly genuine and real.
